ADVANTAGES: Lower Chlorine Levels: Saltwater pools utilise a salt chlorinator or salt cell to generate chlorine, but the chlorine level is typically lower than in traditional chlorine pools. This results in softer water that is often gentler on the skin and eyes, providing a more comfortable swimming experience. Reduced Maintenance: With a saltwater pool, there's no need to add chlorine regularly, as the salt cell produces chlorine as needed. This can lead to fewer fluctuations in chlorine levels, simplifying pool maintenance and reducing the need for frequent chemical adjustments. Cost-Effectiveness: Despite higher upfront costs for installation, saltwater pools can be more cost-effective in the long run. You'll save money over time as there's no need to continuously purchase, transport, or store chlorine, resulting in lower ongoing maintenance expenses. Minimal Chemical Usage: Saltwater pools generally require fewer additional chemicals such as algaecides or shock treatments, contributing to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable pool environment. DISADVANTAGES: Higher Initial Cost: The installation of a saltwater system can be more expensive compared to traditional chlorine systems due to the need for a salt chlorinator or salt cell. Increased Electrical Consumption: Salt cells require electricity to convert salt into chlorine, leading to additional electrical costs over time. Salt Corrosion: The presence of salt in the pool water can cause corrosion on certain pool fixtures, equipment, or types of stone decking, potentially requiring costly repairs or replacements. Complexity: Maintaining optimal salt levels and ensuring the proper functioning of the salt cell can be challenging. If the salt cell malfunctions or if salt levels are not adequately maintained, there may be insufficient chlorine production, leading to potential pool problems such as algae growth or water quality issues. Regular monitoring and maintenance are essential to address these challenges and ensure the effective operation of a saltwater pool.

ADVANTAGES: Lower Initial Cost: Traditional chlorine pools generally have a lower upfront cost compared to saltwater systems, making them more budget-friendly for initial setup. Simplicity: Many pool professionals and owners are more familiar with maintaining chlorine pools, as they have been the standard for many years. This familiarity can make troubleshooting and maintenance tasks more straightforward. Fast-Acting: Chlorine has the ability to act quickly to resolve water problems, such as algae growth or bacterial contamination, providing rapid and effective water treatment. DISADVANTAGES: Regular Maintenance: Chlorine levels in traditional pools need to be checked and adjusted more frequently to maintain optimal water quality. This requires regular testing and chemical additions, increasing the ongoing maintenance workload. Cost of Chlorine: Over the lifespan of the pool, continual purchases of chlorine are necessary to maintain appropriate chlorine levels. The cost of chlorine can accumulate over time, contributing to higher long-term maintenance expenses. Potential for Irritation: Higher chlorine levels in traditional pools can cause skin, eye, and hair irritation for some individuals, especially those with sensitive skin or allergies. This can result in discomfort or allergic reactions for swimmers. Odour and Taste: Chlorine pools can sometimes have a distinctive smell and taste, which some people may find unpleasant or off-putting. This odour and taste can be particularly noticeable in indoor pools or pools with inadequate ventilation.

ADVANTAGES: Chemical-Free Swimming Experience: Natural pools use biological filters and aquatic plants to keep the water clean, eliminating the need for chlorine or salt. This provides a more eco-friendly and chemical-free swimming experience, which can be beneficial for individuals with sensitivities or allergies to pool chemicals. Blends Seamlessly with Environment: Natural pools blend harmoniously with their surroundings, resembling natural bodies of water like ponds or lakes. They enhance the aesthetic appeal of outdoor spaces and create a tranquil and inviting atmosphere for swimmers and spectators alike. Low Maintenance: Once established, natural pools typically require lower maintenance compared to traditional chlorine or saltwater pools. The self-regulating ecosystem helps to maintain water quality naturally, reducing the need for frequent chemical adjustments and cleaning. DISADVANTAGES: Initial Cost: The initial installation cost of a natural pool can be higher than that of traditional saltwater or chlorine pools. Building a natural pool requires specialized construction techniques and materials to create the ecosystem, which can increase upfront expenses. Limited Temperature Control: Natural pools rely on natural processes for temperature regulation, which may result in cooler water temperatures compared to heated saltwater or chlorine pools. Swimmers who prefer warmer water may find natural pools less comfortable, especially in colder climates or during cooler seasons. Potential for Algae Growth: Without chemical treatments like chlorine or salt, natural pools may be more prone to algae growth under certain conditions. Maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and water chemistry is essential to prevent algae blooms and maintain water clarity. Complex Design and Maintenance: Designing and maintaining a natural pool requires specialised knowledge and expertise in aquatic ecology and landscaping. Proper planning and ongoing management are necessary to ensure the health and stability of the ecosystem, which may involve periodic adjustments and interventions to address issues such as algae growth or water clarity.

Alex Kemsley Awarded ISPE Fellowship for Outstanding Industry Service

The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), has announced that Alex Kemsley, Managing Director of Waterstream, the UK’s leading specialist in domestic swimming pools, has been awarded an ISPE fellowship. This is the highest honour bestowed by the ISPE council, recognising his outstanding service to both the swimming pool industry and the Institute itself.

Founded in 1978, ISPE is the leading authority for professionals in the swimming pool and wet leisure industries. The organisation supports professionals in the sector with expert training, recognised qualifications, and resources for continuous learning.

“I am incredibly proud to have been made a fellow of ISPE and for the recognition from my peers in this industry”, comments Alex. “I am looking forward to raising wider awareness of ISPE and of all of the great work it does for professionals in the industry and for young people embarking on their careers in this sector. One of my missions is to evolve the education programme. As a dyslexic entrepreneur, I understand the importance of addressing different learning styles and want to make ISPE’s education programme more inclusive for all types of learn
