Graphine Nano Particles in Pools

Nano and Micro Particles in Swimming Pools

the pros and cons of Nano Particles in swimming pools

Nano & Micro particles in swimming pool production is a relatively new development. In this article we explore the pro’s and con’s of these relatively new and yet to be fully understood products in swimming pools.

First off lets understand the science. What are Nano and Mirco Particles?

Nano particles are defined as Small particles less than 10 micrometers common materials used in pool production include Graphine.

Micro particles are defined as a particles less then 5mm in length

Its important to understand that particles of all sizes exist in nature. Some are man made (inorganic) and some are natural (organic) both can be dangerous to human health but its import to understand which ones we have control over in our environment ie. Man Made inorganic nano particles.

Lets start with the Pros. Nano particles such as graphine have immense strength and are incredibly light, they are also quite cheap to add to products to gain these benefits. However, the science behind these particles in our environment is yet to be fully understood which is concerning in a product that we will frequently submerge our nearest and dearest in.

US Environmental Protection Agency cites “Small particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter pose the greatest problems”

With ingestion though the lungs and potentially into the bloodstream causing;

  • premature death in people with heart or lung disease
  • nonfatal heart attacks
  • irregular heartbeat
  • aggravated asthma
  • decreased lung function
  • increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing.

The Journal Nature a well respected publication reported  “I think it is fair to say the potential risk might be high,” says Li, choosing his words carefully.

A specific study on the toxicity of graphine indicate;

” The large part of available current literature indicates that graphene-based nanomaterials are cytotoxic. Although the particular mechanism for their toxicity has not yet been established, ROS elevation, lipid peroxidation, nutrient/oxygen depletion, and inflammation have been most widely recognized mechanisms for graphene-based nanomaterials toxicity”

With mounting evidence of the dangers of these products every Compass Swimming Pool is certified Nano Particle Free.
