How we install your inground pool

We understand the importance of all of the different facets of the construction process, so we offer a bespoke design and installation service. This means that we can provide you with an in ground pool that is perfect for your requirements.

The first step in the process is the excavation of the site of the pool – this is carried out by experienced groundwork contractors with many years of expertise in all aspects of structural and stabilisation work. Once the hole has been excavated, your one piece ceramic pool is delivered to the site and then lowered into place.

We follow this up by installing the plumbing and wiring from the plant room before adding the additional features inside the pool, including the heaters, lighting and filtration system. Finally, we build the area surrounding the pool, dealing with everything from tiling and paving to decking.

Frequently asked questions

The price of any swimming pool will vary on a number of factors, including its size, whether it’s going indoors or outdoors and the amount of labour involved in its installation. With an inground pool, the price will be in the region of £50,000 to £120,000.

To understand the breakdown of these costs and to obtain a more accurate figure for your specific requirements, we recommend talking to a member of our team or visiting our showroom in West Sussex where we will be happy to go through everything with you.

Inground pools are more complex to install than above ground styles due to the excavation and groundworks. The soil quality, draining requirements and access to dig the hole and remove the soil will all vary from location to location. For more detailed information, take a look at our pool installation page

With an inground pool, construction is greatly affected by the groundworks process, due to the quality of your soil and the ease of access and removal. There is also the preparation work that you will need to complete, whether that is clearing your garden or building the foundations of a new outbuilding.

Once the ground is prepared, it takes very little time for us to actually install the pool. This is because our ceramic-fibreglass shells arrive prefabricated, meaning they just need to be lowered into place. For a typical inground pool, the process takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Creating a high-quality pool area requires an experienced designer, as well as an interior designer and architect if the pool is going indoors. If you have already arranged a building team to carry out the work, we are more than happy to work alongside them in order to deliver the best possible result, although the earlier we are brought on board, the easier this will be.

At Compass Pools, our ceramic composite pools are prefabricated to order in a range of styles and sizes. Don’t worry about having a limited choice – our 9 different models are available in a total of 27 sizes, including plunge pools and lap pools. Contact our experienced team to discuss the dimensions you’re looking for and we’ll help you make the best decision for your home, garden or business.

We also offer a large variety of customisation options for your swimming pool, including a range of material colours and features including down lighting, waterfalls and much more.

If you are looking for a pool that is only partly built into the ground, you may be thinking of an infinity pool. These are commonly installed on a hillside or slope, so partial excavation is required. Contact our team to discuss your ideas and we can confirm whether they are possible and provide a free quote.

Outdoor pools usually do not require planning permission as they are considered ‘garden projects’, but there are some limitations. For example, listed buildings, national parks and conservation areas will have stricter rules. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority before investing in a pool project.

Indoor pools have slightly different regulations, particularly if you are intending to build an extension onto your home to house the pool. Freestanding buildings of certain dimensions will fall under Permitted Development, but again, checking with your local authority is a good idea.

A conventional pool will require constant disinfectant chemicals, surface skimming and filter cleansing. The amount of maintenance will vary according to the pool’s size, usage, location and water type. For example, outdoor pools will require more frequent skimming than an indoor pool to keep the surface free of leaves and bugs (although a pool cover will reduce this).

At Compass Pools, the ceramic fibreglass we use to build our pools actually makes them more hygienic than a concrete pool. This is because the material is smooth and non-porous, preventing bacteria build-up. Read a more in-depth comparison between ceramic pools and concrete pools here.

In addition to a filter, conventional pools primarily rely on chlorine (available in a liquid, powder or tablet form) to disinfect the water. There are also various additives you can put into your pool, such as chlorine stabilisers, algaecides and shock treatments.

The precise combination and quantity of chemicals will vary to the specific circumstances of each pool, based on its size, location and usage. Our specialists can assist you with a specific recommendation.

Installing a fence around the perimeter of the pool is a good idea (and a legal requirement in many areas), with a lockable gate so that children and pets cannot get into the area unsupervised. Solid pool covers are also practical, giving you the opportunity to reclaim the surface area when the pool is not in use.

At Compass Pools, we have a nationwide installation network so that you can have one of our contemporary ceramic pools at your home or business, wherever you’re based. Our headquarters and showroom is in Sussex, but our teams work across the south coast, in and around London, into the Midlands and East Anglia as well as in Scotland and Wales.

What our clients say about us…

  • Compass Pools were great throughout the whole process of choosing a pool, ordering it, installing it and tweaking any slight changes since it was finished. It has now been in for a year and I swim every day before breakfast regardless of the weather, snow on the ground etc. We have recently had a pool house finished so I can go straight from the pool into the shower without having to dry first! I would thoroughly recommend Compass Pools for the products they sell and for the service that they provide.

  • There are two aspects to the company, the people and the product. I can't fault either of them. The people are friendly, expert and very helpful. Theirs is a premium product but worth it. The build quality is first rate and the operating system options can give you a package as sophisticated as you wish.
