How Is An Infinity Pool Built?

Constructing an infinity pool requires very extensive planning, excavation of the site, and numerous finishing touches. A critically important step we use at Compass Pools is building the actual pool shell using specially designed ceramic moulds.

Design and Planning

Site Survey and Vanishing Edge Placement

A comprehensive site survey should be conducted to analyse the terrain, views, sunlight exposure, and prevailing winds. This will determine the optimal placement and angle of the infinity pool’s vanishing edges to showcase impressive visuals. The survey ensures the edges will project maximum visual drama without compromising structural integrity or water containment.

Pool Size and Catch Basin Design

The desired infinity pool capacity and dimensions need to be established, accounting for usage requirements and site limitations. Complex technical calculations are then required to engineer an adequately sized catch basin and drainage slopes. The basin must be large enough to prevent overflow during displacements from pool users while also enabling efficient recirculation of water through the hydraulic system beneath the pool. Precise dimensions and angles are imperative for functionality.

Hydraulic System Design

The infinity pool’s hydraulic system circulates and filters all pool water. Every pump, pipe, and filtration component must be selected, sized and situated to accommodate the customised pool configuration and maximise performance. This comprehensive hydraulic design requires advanced fluid dynamic computations factoring in volumetric flow rates, head pressures, and load balances. Component selection further necessitates analysis of compatibility, reliability, energy efficiency and noise management. The entire system must function cohesively for the upkeep of pristine pool water. Precision design is vital given accessibility constraints underneath the pool.

Excavation

In the meticulous preparation of the site, the entirety of the pool area and catch basin undergoes a thorough excavation process, adhering precisely to the established plans and required dimensions. The catch basin, in particular, is meticulously shaped with a calculated drainage slope. This strategic design ensures optimal water flow, directing it seamlessly towards the recirculation intakes. This level of precision in site preparation lays the foundation for a functional and efficient pool system, emphasising both adherence to plans and the facilitation of proper drainage.

Pool Shell with Ceramic Mould

The construction process begins with the application of a patented ceramic composite material within the mould, meticulously layered to craft a robust pool shell. Additional composite layers are integrated to enhance structural strength. After curing, the pool shell is carefully removed from the ceramic mould.

This meticulous process results in a one-piece ceramic pool shell known for its durability and quality. The installation of the pool is straightforward, using a crane to efficiently place it into the excavated site. This method ensures structural integrity and demonstrates a commitment to precision in creating a resilient and visually appealing pool.

Catch Basin and Hydraulics

Situated beneath the vanishing edge, the catch basin assumes its strategic position alongside a meticulously engineered hydraulics system. This placement is a deliberate and calculated choice, harmonising seamlessly with the overall design of the structure. The catch basin, carefully integrated into the vanishing edge, serves as a crucial component in maintaining the visual appeal and functionality of the entire system. Complemented by the intricately designed hydraulics system, this installation ensures the efficient management and redirection of water, contributing to the overall aesthetic and operational excellence of the feature.

Finishing Touches

Following the curing process of the pool shell, a meticulous touch is added with the application of an interior plaster finish. This serves a dual purpose: first, creating a watertight seal that enhances the pool’s longevity and prevents leaks, and second, yielding a flawlessly smooth surface. The application of this interior plaster finish is executed with precision, ensuring not only functional integrity but also contributing to the overall aesthetic appeal of the pool. This final step in the construction process encapsulates both durability and visual refinement, elevating the pool’s quality to meet the highest standards.
